Bob Hope

Years ago when I saw an elderly person moving slowly, I often wondered why it was necessary that they move so slowly. I no longer wonder.

In 1946 just after the end of WWII, Bob Hope was entertaining 10,000+ troops soon to be deployed home. One of Bob's special guests for that show was the great Maurice Chevalier who had been a mentor to Bob and was 15 years Bob's senior.  Hard to imagine anyone older than Bob Hope.  Anyway Maurice's final musical number that night was "I'm glad I'm not young anymore." When that number ended, Maurice was treated with a tearful standing ovation from those troops. After the show Bob went to Maurice's dressing room and said "Maurice, what a song!" Maurice smiled a sad Chevalier smile and said "Don't believe a word of it."

Twelve years later Maurice's song would be heard again in a movie classic entitled GIGI starring Leslie Caron, Louie Jourdan, Hermione Gingold, Eva Gabor and ofcourse Maurice himself.
